A project course held weekly from March – June 2026, led by Julia Moser, Karin Altmann, Jennifer Grunder, Petra Vicianova and Irene Posch.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course, colour is approached as a material and a process through hands-on practice. A series of workshop-based sessions explores different aspects through exemplary techniques that are experimentally extended: from mordant printing, natural dyeing, and pigment precipitation within circular systems, to living colours derived from bacteria or fungi. At the Crafting Futures Lab, tools, templates, and pattern systems are developed that enable the combination of traditional techniques with new technologies, situating established practices within contemporary contexts.
The course aims to cultivate an awareness of the diversity, materiality, impacts, and sustainable use of colour, encouraging an understanding that goes beyond its visual effect. Students gain practical experience, reflect on theoretical frameworks, and build a personal sample archive that can serve as a foundation for artistic–research projects as well as for direct application in future teaching contexts.
In addition, selected sessions are complemented by invited experts who share insights into current research and practice, enriching the discussions.
