Unlearning Design

Julia Moser will be part of the Unlearning Design workshop and roundtable held at the Kunsthochschule Kassel on May 12 2026, sharing insights from her project course “Designing with the Living” conducted together with Noor Stenfert Kroese and Irene Posch.

What role can design play in the sustainable transformation of society? Sustainability and transformative competencies are central topics in design education, yet many teaching formats remain embedded in established structures that tend to constrain rather than foster sustainable innovation. The concept of unlearning opens up a critical perspective: Which assumptions, methods, and practices within design education need to be questioned and overcome in order to enable future-oriented approaches to design?

“Unlearning Design” is an interdisciplinary workshop series that invites experts, practitioners, and students to collectively reflect on education and competency-building in times of multiple crises. The aim is to explore the potential of unlearning — not only for design, but also for architecture and art — and to make these approaches accessible to a wider audience.

The program includes a keynote lecture by Elena Spatz (TU Berlin), co-initiator of the Chair of Unlearning (TUM), who will provide insights into this student-led teaching intervention and discuss how the framework of unlearning has also been theoretically reflected upon. In addition, the collective exchange will offer participants an opportunity to gain insight into the current state of teaching and learning about sustainability within design and artistic disciplines.
